Coronary Artery Disease(CAD)

The illness known as coronary artery disease (CAD) damages the arteries that provide blood to the heart. It is typically brought on by atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque inside the walls of the arteries. By narrowing the inside of the arteries due to this deposit, the blood flow is slowed.

There are numerous risk factors for CAD, some of which cannot be changed. Long-term CAD development eventually evolves to the point where symptoms like chest discomfort are possible. A variety of procedures, like an electrocardiogram (ECG), ECHO stress test or CAG are used to make the diagnosis. Treatment options include dietary adjustments, medication, lifestyle modification and perhaps angioplasty or even surgery.

SYMPTOMS
  • A heart attack
  • Angina- chest pain/discomfort on exertion
  • tightness in the arms, back, neck, or jaw
  • shortness of breath

It may take years for coronary artery disease to manifest. Sometimes symptoms don't appear until the disease has spread silently considerably.

CAUSES
  • Old age
  • Family history
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Poor diet
  • Obesity or extreme weight gain
  • Lack of exercise (sedentary lifestyle)
  • And other medical disorders (such as diabetes/thyroid disorders)
PREVENTION

It is not possible to totally prevent or avoid coronary artery disease. This is because as we get older, everyone develops CAD to some extent. However, you can lower your chances of contracting the illness by

  • Give up smoking: Nicotine causes your blood pressure to rise, which makes coronary artery disease more likely.
  • Manage high blood pressure: Follow a diet that lowers blood pressure in addition to taking your blood pressure medication.
  • Control diabetes.
  • Healthy eating: Pick whole grains, fruits, nuts, veggies, lean meats, and seafood. Try to stay away from high fructose corn syrup, white flour, processed foods, and sweets. Heart health benefits of the Mediterranean diet are excellent. If you have any concerns, ask your doctor how to modify your diet in a way that is good for your heart.
  • Exercising on a regular basis: This strengthens the heart and hence lowers any risk of heart disease. 30 mins of moderate intensity exercise is supposed to be heart healthy.
  • Adding vitamins to food: Your body will receive all the vitamins and minerals it needs from a nutritious diet containing generous helpings of fruits, nuts & vegetables.
